Methodology
The Trivium
The classical Trivium organizes learning into three stages that build upon each other:
I. Grammar
The foundation. Students learn the facts, vocabulary, and fundamental structures of each subject. In mathematics, this means definitions and axioms. In theology, this means scripture and doctrine. In philosophy, this means the primary texts.
II. Logic
The framework. Students learn to reason about what they’ve absorbed — to identify valid arguments, detect fallacies, and build coherent chains of thought. The syllogism is the workhorse of this stage.
III. Rhetoric
The expression. Students learn to communicate their understanding clearly, persuasively, and beautifully. The essay is the primary vehicle — and Scriptorium is the tool we built for it.
AI in the Margin
We believe AI should assist, not replace. In Arca School, AI lives in the margin of the student’s work — like the glossae of medieval scribes:
- Glossa Correctiva — questions weak arguments (pruning)
- Glossa Referentialis — suggests connections between notes (cross-pollination)
- Glossa Explicativa — enriches with context (fertilization)
The student always writes. The AI always assists. The text remains sacred.
